WOMEN | Match Report: Aztecs 3 v 5 London Helvecia

1st May 2023: A valiant Aztecs team finish winless in 2022/23.

Alicia Povey and Ruby Allen injured, and Kayleigh Tonks away. Leah Harris back into the side, Jess Ebhodaghe gets the nod, and Beth Anderson making her first competitive appearance.

With nothing to play for going into this match, both teams were playing for pride. Helvecia looking to stay sharp and build confidence and momentum as they head into the playoffs, and the Aztecs hoping to get some points on the board to take away some of the pain of a difficult season.

Bekah Tonks takes the player of the match award.

That's it now for the women's team for this season. It's been a tough slog, but we're still here, when others have fallen. We'll do a proper season review soon encompassing the entire squad, across the first and reserve team. If you look at the league table, you won't see many positives, but what you will see is a team that never gave up, kept fighting, and came back for more every week. Watch the games and you'll see talent and resilience. The improvement from eighth to sixth is of course a welcome one.

We had several players make their NFS Tier One debut; Hannah Walker, Leah Harris, Mo Delaney, Jess Ebhodaghe, Ruby Allen, and Beth Anderson. We had plenty of different goal scorers, nine in total across first team games; Lauren Sayler, Kayleigh Tonks, Rebekah Tonks, Rebecca Moody, Amy Maidment, Laura Ingram, Nicola Curtis, Alicia Povey, Jess Ebhodaghe.

So what next? The women's squad will have a handful of friendlies in May. In June we will have our Red v Green game and presentation evening, as well as making a return to the Littlehampton tournament (this time with two teams, looking to improve from taking the silver to the gold). Then at the end of July, the team is off to Spain for pre-season training. We will hold open trials at the end of July, as we look to bring in more players and add to the talented squad. If you're a player that would like to give futsal a go, check out our Monday night JustPlay sessions throughout the summer. Everybody is welcome.
